Yoga Therapy

Yoga Therapy

If you're checking out this page, you're probably wondering what yoga therapy and yoga therapists are. Yoga therapy is the application of yogic principles (meditation, breath work, etc.) to address health concerns. This makes yoga therapy highly distinct from yoga classes in which we just teach poses and breath work without a distinct purpose. Yoga teachers also lack the scope of education that yoga therapists posses. Our training includes ~1,500 hours of study in yoga philosophy, psychopathology, pathophysiology, anatomy and physiology, among other subjects. This allow us to work in private practice or alongside other healthcare providers in a hospital or other medical setting.

I'm one of the very few yoga therapists with a joint background in psychotherapy, behavioral science, and chaplaincy. This allows me to fully address each patient's needs biologically, psychologically, socially, and spirituality. My approach to yoga therapy looks like a blend of talk therapy with integration of specific poses, breathing practices, exploration of sensory needs, and lifestyle adjustments to assist with regulation of the nervous system and muscle strengthening where it's needed. Within yoga therapy, I specialize in the following:

  • Pediatric and Adult Mild to Moderate Cerebral Palsy

  • Pediatric and Adult Anxiety Disorders

  • Pediatric Neurodivergence (ADHD, ASD, etc.)

What does the process look like? We'll first meet for an intake appointment in which I conduct a physical and yogic assessment to determine where your baseline is and if I feel you need to see a physical or occupational therapist. If this is the case, I will tell you upfront and give you referrals to other providers in the area as well as a summary of my findings. If I feel that you or your child need psychotherapy, I will make that recommendation and we can simply switch modalities or I'll refer out to another psychotherapist in the area if I don't feel comfortable taking your case.

Pricing

The following pricing is in place:

  • Initial Assessment: $200

  • Followup Appointments: $150

If this isn't affordable for you, let me know and we discuss package pricing (e.g. a six session package for $760 rather than the full $950). At the end of the day, my goal is to help people and make services as accessible as possible, so I'll always do my best to work with your individual situation.

Do You Take Insurance?

Yoga therapy is not currently a licensed profession in Virginia, thus a yoga therapist cannot become in-network with insurance at this time. However, some insurance providers offer out of network (OON) billing for yoga therapy. This means that I will give you a super bill (a summary of charges) to submit to insurance. Regardless of the method, you may receive partial reimbursement from your insurance company. Unfortunately, I can't make any guarantees about reimbursement.
