Autism/ADHD Testing
Thank you for choosing me for your ADHD, ASD, or AuDHD evaluation. The diagnostic process is quite involved; thus, I have put together this guide and FAQ to assist you or your loved one in understanding what to expect. I want to take a moment to emphasize that I use a neurodivergent affirmative approach. This means that my approach to the diagnostic process is non pathologizing. I view neurodivergence as nothing more than a different way of thinking and perceiving the world, thus this process is designed to figure out how you think and why you perceive the world the way that you do to in turn give you and/or your child the tools to be as successful as possible.
Note that I am not a psychologist and thus cannot do neuropsychological testing nor IQ testing. If you are in need of a neuropsychological evaluation, please reach out and I’ll refer you to a psychologist for the appropriate testing. Please find the section that is most applicable to you.
Adults
ADHD or Autism Evaluation
-
You will fill out my intake package which includes consent forms and clinical questionaries.
-
You will complete psychological testing remotely using a platform called Q-Global using your computer, tablet, or phone. This can be completed on your own time.
-
We will meet for what is known as a clinical interview either via Telehealth or at my Fredericksburg, VA office. During this appointment, we will complete what is called a biopsychosocial assessment in which I will ask you questions about your developmental history (childhood) and how you feel that you are impacted in the present. This appointment will take around 1.5 to 2 hours to complete.
-
I will review my notes from our interview and your test results and make a determination as to your diagnosis and write a report.
-
We will schedule a second appointment to go over the results. This will take approximately 30 minutes to complete, and you will have the opportunity to ask me any questions that you may have. If you would like psychotherapy services after your evaluation to assist with adjustment to your diagnosis, I will be happy to discuss this with you at this time as well.
AuDHD (ADHD + Autism) Evaluation
-
You will fill out my intake package with includes consent forms and clinical questionnaires. In the case of a combined evaluation, you will complete information for both ADHD and ASD.
-
You will complete testing for ADHD and ASD using a platform called Q-Global on your own time.
-
We will meet for a clinical interview as outlined above; however, this will be conducted in two separate appointments. One appointment will be related to discussing your developmental and medical history related to ADHD and the other will be dedicated to ASD. In total, the interview portion of the process for a combined evaluation will last a total of approximately four hours.
-
I will review my notes and the testing results to write my diagnostic report.
-
We will schedule a third appointment of 30 minutes duration to go over my findings and address any questions or concerns that you might have.
Teenagers (12 – 17)
The process for an ASD and/or ADHD evaluation for teenagers looks very similar to the process for diagnosing children. However, I make it a key point to put YOU, the teenager, into the driver’s seat as much as possible. I will meet with both you and your parents to figure out what’s going on with your brain, figure out how you think, and how we can best honor your neurotype.
Children (3 – 11)
The process for diagnosing autism in children is generally far more involved than it is with teenagers and adults. Note that I typically will not diagnose ADHD in a child younger than 12; however, if I feel that there are clinically significant indicators, I will recommend that we complete combined testing at no additional cost.
ASD Evaluation
-
You will complete the intake paperwork for your child. This will include clinical questionnaires and consent forms. Note that I will need to send questionnaires to all important people in your child’s life to make an accurate diagnosis (parents, teachers, etc.).
-
You and your child will complete psychological testing either remotely or in person at my office on a platform called Q-Global during your assessment appointment.
-
You will meet with me either in my office or via Telehealth for a psychological assessment. This process should take around 2 hours to complete as I will need a comprehensive developmental, educational, medical, and psychiatric history.
-
Upon completion of your assessment appointment, I will review all information gathered and write a report with my diagnostic impression and suggestions for next steps.
-
We will set up another appointment to discuss the report and address any questions or concerns.
Cost of Testing
I do not take insurance as I wish to protect patient privacy in the current political climate. Accepting insurance also creates many barriers for both the patient and the clinician that impact care. I address this in greater in the FAQ section. To address this, I have created what I feel is fair and equitable pricing. The typical cost of testing is $2,500+; however, I want diagnostic testing to be available to as many individuals and families as possible without the gatekeeping of unrealistic costs. Please see below for my fee schedule. As you are reviewing, please choose whatever tier fits your needs at this time and know that this will be “no questions asked” regarding pricing.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
I am already diagnosed with either ADHD or ASD. Which evaluation do I need?
-
You’d just need the other evaluation. For example, if you’re already diagnosed with ADHD, you’d just need an ASD evaluation. Please inform me of a prior diagnosis, including the age of diagnosis, in your intake paperwork.
-
-
May I or my child stim during the testing appointment?
-
Yes! Feel free to stim, fidget, or do whatever is needed to help self-regulate. You’re free to bring your favorite fidgets and you can use the “weighted therapy dog” in my office if you wish.
-
-
My child is aggressive. May I still bring them for an in-person evaluation?
-
Unfortunately, no. For my safety, I kindly ask that we complete your child’s evaluation via Telehealth.
-
-
Will my college/university accept your diagnosis for accommodations?
-
In most cases, yes. My diagnostic process includes the required testing for most colleges.
-
-
Can you do neuropsychological testing?
-
No. I can do testing related to the diagnosis of ASD and ADHD; however, I am unable to complete intelligence tests. If I feel that a full neuropsychological evaluation is needed, I will refer out to a clinical psychologist or school psychologist for that portion.
-
-
Why is diagnostic testing so expensive?
-
The primary reason for the high cost is the amount of time that it takes me to complete this process. The interview process can last up to four hours, and it takes me additional time to review your test results, interpret the findings, and write the diagnostic report itself. There is also overhead such as the cost of test administration.
-
-
Why don’t you accept insurance?
-
There are several reasons that I don’t accept insurance for psychotherapy or diagnostic testing. First and foremost, accepting insurance means that they determine the treatment methods that I am allowed to use along with the duration of therapy. This directly impacts the patient as some individuals require longer durations of therapy than others and not everyone responds well to cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) which is what insurance typically requires that a therapist use. Secondly, insurance can do something called a “clawback.” A clawback is where an insurance company can demand that a therapist pay back any claims previously paid for any reason that they see fit, even years after treatment termination.
